Temporarily Relocating For Work? 5 Reasons To Rent More Space

Posted on: 22 March 2022

When you must make a temporary move for work, you probably just want to find a convenient place to sleep and get the job over with so you can go home. You may want to choose temporary housing with a little extra space. Why is this particularly important when away from home for an extended stay? Here are a few of the most important reasons.

1. Bringing the Family. Being away from your family is one of the more difficult parts of temporary work assignments. And if you select a rental with only enough room for one, your family never has the choice to come spend time with you or explore your temporary location. However, if you choose a unit with at least one extra bedroom or more flexible space, others can come—whether for a day or the whole time.

2. Accumulating Stuff. You may head out for the temporary assignment with only the bare minimum of belongings, but the longer you stay, the more you'll need. Belongings accumulate over weeks and months as you retrieve items from home and buy replacements locally. So the amount of space needed when you move in shouldn't be your measuring stick.

3. Getting Claustrophobic. A small place might feel fine when you move in, but after a few weeks or months, it can start to feel very cramped. Because temporary workers often spend a lot of time either at work or at home, they need a rental where they can feel somewhat comfortable. Not only does this often call for elbow room, but you may also want to alleviate boredom or homesickness with personal belongings from home, like home gym equipment, supplies for a hobby, or even a great movie setup. But this all requires space.

4. Working at Home. If you relocated to complete an important assignment, it may not end at the office at 5 o'clock. Be sure you can do work at home by renting a place with a home office or another flex space you can turn into a temporary work base.

5. Bringing Your Pets. Finally, would you be more comfortable and less homesick if you bring along a beloved pet? Or are you a pet's only caretaker? While less common, those who plan to bring their pet to the temporary location must account for its needs too. This may mean more space inside the house or a yard where Fido can run around. Don't let your pets get bored during the day and fall into misbehavior.
